Strong turnout, cooperative weather makes fair success

With a good response to a new event and a little help from Mother Nature, the Turtle Mountain Ag Society was able to put together another strong fair.

The annual event was held from June 22-23. Featuring livestock shows, a demolition derby, display building and other activities, the fair was once again a success.

“It was very good this year,” said Ag Society President Bryce Scott. “There was very good attendance, with a lot of people walking around all the time.”

The official figure was about 1,150 people, but that was only the paid attendees. The numbers, strong as they are were probably a little higher.

There were a few weather concerns going into the fair. What were once dry conditions in Boissevain and area have recently become monsoon-like. There were some big rains in the days leading up to Boissevain Fair, and there were warnings of more during the event. However, they held off.

“We were a little worried during the demo derby, that it might be too wet or rain again. It was pretty windy, though. Maybe the wind was a little high with some things, but it helped dry everything out. The weather did cooperate during the fair.”

Scott said Darbies’ Demo Derby did work out well, with plenty in attendance. Although he was busy in other areas, those involved in the livestock events were happy with the numbers. After the cattle barns were only half full last year, they were packed in 2019 with 80 entries. There were 55 miniature horse and around 30 light horses.

“Everyone was happy with it,” Scott said.

A new event this year was the Sunrise Credit Union children’s activities. Held in the curling rink, there were six or seven different games, in which each cost a ticket. If kids did well, they would get vouchers that were redeemed for prizes. The games meant the displays had to be moved into the arena with the hobby show. Scott said it was worth it and pointed the road to the future.

“It went over really well. I think everyone involved enjoyed that. There were a lot of age ranges covered there, which was great. I think if (Sunrise) was willing, we would do it again. We can keep the displays in the arena. I think we will always keep something going on in the curling rink.”

Community members were impressed with the Boissevain Fair this year.

“What a wonderful event,” said Marj Coupland. “Watching those kids have fun, the grandparents milling around and watching the kids have fun. It was a wonderful weekend.”

“There were people at everything,” added Ivan Strain, who said he was talking to a couple from Virden who came to watch family at the horse show. “There was something for everyone. The curling rink was full of kids, there were the bouncers, the livestock, it was great.”
