Many different organizations and projects in the community have benefitted from this fundraising avenue in the past. Mann said the recipients for this year were selected from grant applications received before the March 20 deadline. In the future, there will be an annual funding application process for groups wanting to be considered. The applications include the organization’s mission and purpose, how money will be used and the benefit to the community.
One of the beneficiaries this year is a major municipal project. Work is beginning to replace the runway at the busy Deloraine-Winchester Airport. This is an important endeavor, Mann said.
“The Deloraine Airport was selected because it is a significant infrastructure project that serves not only residents in Deloraine-Winchester but also people and businesses throughout the surrounding area. The airport supports agricultural operations, medical transportation, business travel, emergency services and border-related activities, providing benefits well beyond the local municipality.”
The Deloraine-Winchester-Brenda Handy Van was also selected as its public transportation improves the lives of people in the municipality and surrounding neighbours.
Mann added they have not yet decided on how the proceeds will be split between the two recipients.
Right now they are busy selling acres for the fundraiser. Each acre is $100 and can be purchased at the municipal office, Morrison Agencies and the Deloraine Golf Club. The idea is to cover as many inputs as possible, so that more money can go to the important community projects and organizations. Mann said they usually do not cover everything, but in recent years, acre sales have raised about $10,000 annually, which is a significant help.
The hope is the Community Fundraiser can continue to contribute to Deloraine-Winchester as it has in the past.
“This fundraiser has been an important community initiative for many years,” she explained. “Since 2017, it has raised more than $793,000 for local projects and organizations. It provides an opportunity for residents, businesses and agricultural producers to work together to support community priorities and improve local services and amenities. The Community 1/4 Section Fundraiser is a project that allows everyone to contribute and make a difference.”
