On August 8, the International Peace Garden will be holding their second Handshake Across the Border as a part of the Summer Floral Celebration. Prior to this, on July 30, they will be doing some promotional filming, in which they are looking for extras to be a part of the fun.

Anyone wanting to appear on screen while enjoying the beauty of the International Peace Garden will have their opportunity on July 30.

An international video crew will be out at the Garden creating footage of the local attraction. According to Peace Garden CEO Tim Chapman, they are looking to promote the area now and into the future.

“This is a different type of promotion this year,” Chapman explained. “We want to get some footage made up, some deeper footage we can use for 10 years down the road.”

Chapman said the Garden receives a lot of outreach from video production companies who want to be hired to film promotional material. This year, a company made a positive impression and they are moving forward.

“They can do these films that can go on US and Canadian cable TV and web versions. They make a five minute piece that can be picked up by stations.”

As well as the film itself, the company will be shooting the whole day of  July 30, with footage going to the Peace Garden. As they hired them, the Garden will decide where the shooting will take place, who they will talk to – staff and supporters – and this will be used by the Garden for their own promotions. Chapman said it could be for something as simple as a small feature on their website.

“The way the internet has changed, if you have good footage, you can cut it up for 15 second clips, or still pictures. It will make a nice library of film to access.”

He said a lot would be done in the formal garden area, which will be in its peak season condition. They will also visit the conservatory, lakes and 9/11 site.

What they are looking for are people to appear in the background. They want the area to look busy and have plenty of motion.

“We’re looking for anyone who wants to help us out,” Chapman explained. “We want it to look like a natural garden setting, make sure people move around.”

He added they have no set number of people to be involved, and the time commitment is one or two hours. Participants get into the Garden free and their names go into a draw for a free annual pass.

Another major event at the Peace Garden is also upcoming. The Summer Floral Celebration is on Saturday, August 8. It will include songwriting workshops, a classic car show and kids’ activities. This year’s Garden theme, “Celebrating Pollinators” will be a part of the tours on that day.

“It is a great day to celebrate the Garden every year when we are at peak bloom.”

This year will be the second “Handshake Across the Border”. Chapman said last year it was a rainy day, but the sun came out at just the right time for Canadians and Americans to stretch their friendly hands across the 49th parallel. Much like this time last year, official relations between Washington and Ottawa are not great, but as the Peace Garden CEO stressed, the people of the two countries know how deep the ties really are.

“Last year was phenomenal,” Chapman stated. “We must have had 300 people there. Those of us who live in border communities know how our friendship is greater than these tensions. They get it, they live it. The Garden has always stood for that, and we can show it through an event like this.”

Overall, he feels the film and their events are important for the Peace Garden’s continued growth.

“Any tourism destination has to promote itself, and show how it is special. It is so important to get this footage done and consistency in events. It’s what makes people want to come.”
