The Melita Lions began in 1976 and have contributed much to the area. They faithfully raised funds in a variety of ways. For instance, with the help of local farmers and businesses, they grew crops which they were able to sell. They also sold sweepstakes tickets. With the money raised through ventures like this, they were able to support various organizations and activities. The local bowling lanes and library were among the many beneficiaries. Plaques commemorating the Melita Lions’ generosity can be found in places like the arena and the golf course. Activities such as the fiddling contests, Journey for Sight and Thresherman Days also received regular donations from the Melita Lions, and participation from their members.

As well, they established a Community Fund. Money for this came from fundraisers and local canvassing. This fund was used to assist families who were dealing with disasters and medical expenses. 

The local Lions also sent money to the national Lions to be used to help those needing guide dogs. 

And, of course, they regularly prepared floats for the annual Santa Claus parade, right to the end, participating in the one that took place this past December. Members of the club walked behind their float, personally giving bags of candies to the children. This was the final “activity” of the Melita and Area Lions Club.

Even in “death”, the local Lions have continued to contribute to various causes. They have passed their Community Fund on to Melita’s Royal Canadian Legion Branch #127 to provide further assistance to those in need. 

All remaining funds have been distributed among organizations they have supported over the years.

It is always a sad day when a beneficent organization closes its doors. It is also a time to reflect on how the Melita & Area Lions Club have helped to make the community a better place.
