Over 82 yard sales, a record number of participants, joined in the popular town-wide garage sale event, which was expanded to include Friday evening in addition to the traditional Saturday morning.
Other Saturday events included a Farmers’ Market, the Souris-Glenwood Firefighter’s Barbeque at the Firehall with over 450 burgers sold and proceeds going towards firefighting equipment, Laluk family fundraiser and sales at local stores.
The Scarecrow Social was enjoyed by approximately 145 people and featured some home raised talent - The Dust Rhinos of Winnipeg with lead singer Blair McEvoy, and opening act Morgan Peloquin. The guest performers were impressed with the comfort and quality of their accommodations at The Souris Hotel, as well as the local food, the friendly community and the fun-loving attendees.
Sunday events included a repeat performance of Gossip in the Graveyard, youth rugby jamboree and the Southwest Cruzers Car Show.
According to car club president Scott Murray, there were 120 cars at the show. Murray also organized a 50/50 fundraiser for the Fellowship Club, donating $500 to the organization and Tony Laluk’s family fundraiser organized by the Souris Curling Club.
Al Logan of Ideanna’s Designs remarked that it was a very good weekend. There were many local people out and about and lots of out of town visitors who had never been to Souris before who loved the town, thought it was very pretty and had a lot to offer.
“All feedback has been positive, whether people who held yard sales, retail businesses and restaurant owners, community members and many, many visitors who love our town and tell of their positive experiences here. They can’t wait to come back,” added Whitfield.
Whitfield gave a sincere appreciation to the many sponsors of the event, the staff at the complex, the Ag Society for use of fence panels, Scarecrow judges Kim Eissner and Monique Perey, J&S Meats for being open during the social, and the hard-working committee: Darren Janz, Loretta Turner, Caleigh Walker, Cassie Quadrelli, Denise Luptak, Brenda McKinny, Tracy Armitage, Stacy Martin and Pam Whitfield.
